The Coldplay - Ode to Deodorant / Brothers + Sisters (Demo Tape)

(artwork made by me :)

* Demo cassette tape in plastic case without an insert, titled label with management contact number, and artist credit as "The Coldplay" (but on some clear cases there is a label that just credits "Coldplay".

Circulated by manager Phil Harvey to try to get the band signed, the [blank C-30] cassettes used were made by Transco using BASF chrome tape and duplicated by an unknown source.

“Ode to Deodorant” is regarded as one of the first-ever songs the former band-named “Pectoralz”, then “Starfish” until finally the name they settled on “Coldplay”’s they’ve recorded. Very few copies were made on cassettes that the band had given to their loved ones and friends. This song since then following the later-on success of the band would not be mentioned nor ever played again from the band.

In an August 2003 article from interview magazine, drummer Will Champion commented that it
“Had a good ending and a good bass line, but it was a crappy song.”
When asked whether the song is cringe-worthy, Chris Martin joked that he doesn’t listen to it.

While pursuing a major record label to sign to, the group’s manager and friend Phil Harvey released a demo tape to various labels that included two songs: “Ode to Deodorant” and “Brothers + Sisters”.

The group would re-work this song in their single release under their first record label Fierce Panda Records, then re-work the song again as a B-side under their second record label Parlophone.

The song was performed live at Coldplay’s first ever show on 16th January, 1998.
