Ghost Stories (Instrumentals)

Image
The band’s gift for soaring melodies is evident throughout  Ghost Stories —particularly on the magnetic first single, “Magic.” Chris Martin’s heart-rending falsetto floats along in a haze of synth-washed ambience (as on the entrancing  Kid A –influenced “Midnight”) or sparely accompanied by acoustic instruments (“Oceans,” “O”).  Ghost Stories  demonstrates the expressive power of understatement. X&Y (Instrumentals)

Image
Coldplay’s third album embraces their destiny to become the world’s biggest band. It is the emotive, melodic rock of their previous records writ stadium-size. Wracked with Chris Martin’s self-doubt, “Speed of Sound” and “Square One” are precision engineered to peak, dip, rush, and resolve with maximum visceral impact. There are hints of the left turns and electronica that would come with later albums–“Talk” borrows from Kraftwerk–but Coldplay 3.0 is a persuasive case for refinement over re-invention. A Rush of Blood to the Head (Instrumentals)

Image
Recorded in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks,  A Rush of Blood to the Head  is driven by tenderness and urgency. The simplicity of the band’s melodies, the suppleness of Chris Martin’s vocals, and the grandness of the arrangements make “The Scientist” and “Clocks” resilient anthems for a new millennium. While the atmospheric “Daylight” and “Warning Sign” look back to the weightless space balladry of David Bowie and Pink Floyd, “In My Place” is a gentle, slow motion march that seems to stop time.

Parachutes (Instrumentals)

Image
In some ways it’s hard to recognize the festival headliners of today in the winsome, melancholy indie rock yearbook photo that is 2000’s Parachutes. But the heart of the band, on open display in the soaring chorus of “Trouble” and the super-sweet charm of “Yellow,” remains unchanged. In the eerie, liquid guitars and chiming, emotional wrangles of “Shiver” and the haunted late-night paranoia of “Spies” shine the songwriting talents that propelled Coldplay into stadiums.
